Velocity Micro Vector and the Falcon Northwest Mach V - Falcon Northwest Mach V

The Mach V from Falcon Northwest is a highly customizable and highly expensive desktop aimed at gamers and performance hounds.  Its price may scare many consumers, but its performance will attract those willing to spend on a desktop to suit their gaming needs.  The following review will focus on the Mach V that prices out to just over $4,800.  The desktop comes with a solid three-year warranty on parts and labor.

Falcon Northwest offers you the chance to build the desktop of your dreams via its website, so you can basically add every feature you can think of to the Mach V.  For just over $4,800, the desktop comes with an overclocked 4.6 GHz Intel Core i7 2600K processor with 8 MB of L3 cache.  This chip is one of the new Sandy Bridge processors from Intel, and it allows the Mach V to handle virtually any task you throw at it.  Multiple tasks at the same time and gaming are processed with zero fuss, making the Mach 5 an attractive piece of hardware for fans of snappy performance.  As one would expect when paying such a premium, the Mach V has performance that surpasses most of the less-expensive competition.  The desktop also comes with a hefty 16 GB of DDR3 SDRAM to help with multitasking.
Additional core components of the Mach V include two 64 GB Solid-state drives and a 1 TB hard drive for plenty of fast storage.  Graphics are supported by two 1.5 GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 cards.  As stated, the desktop can handle all modern games and also works well for viewing HD video.  Speaking of HD video, the integrated Blu-ray player also makes the Mach V a viable entertainment desktop for viewing movies in their finest available form.  A card reader is included, which can be used to receive and transfer data with other devices like digital cameras.  The reader accepts various formats, such as SD cards, Memory Sticks, and more.  In terms of the operating system, you get Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit pre-installed.
Considering its large frame, it's no surprise that the Mach V has plenty of room for upgrades inside.  There's room for four extra hard drives, and the RAM can also be upgraded from 16 GB, although that should be plenty for most users.  Besides that, there's an open 1x PCI Express slot and a standard PCI slot ready for use.
As mentioned, the Mach V is quite large and definitely not aimed for those seeking to save space in their setups.  The tower measures 24.1 inches tall by 21.5 inches deep by 8.7 inches wide.  While that may be a problem for some, those looking to purchase a powerhouse desktop probably do not care about the extravagant size.  The tower comes in a black anodized color scheme, but you can also upgrade it to different colors or effects for a hefty premium.  The tower has a very clean look to it, without many effects other than the Falcon Northwest logo that stares at you on the front panel.  As far as connectivity is concerned, you get a fair amount of options.  There's a mini-HDMI port, two DVI ports, an Ethernet port, plenty of audio connections, USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, FireWire, and eSATA.
If gaming and performance are of utmost importance, the Falcon Northwest Mach V stands out.  That is, if you can afford the desktop.  It is highly customizable, but its price tag will likely scare many away.  If it doesn't, the Mach V is a respectable pick for those seeking a powerful performer.
