Sony moved into laptops with the VAIO brand in 1997

Sony was started in the aftermath of World War II, during the rapid reconstruction of Japan that gave birth to its world-leading electronics industry.

Sony was started in the aftermath of World War II, during the rapid reconstruction of Japan that gave birth to its world-leading electronics industry. The company originally had a Japanese name, Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (TKT), but the founder changed this feeling that a short, catchy name using the Western alphabet would work better if the company wanted international success (this was a rare practice at the time, and was considered a controversial practice in Japan).

The company immediately started innovating, building Japan’s first tape players and the first successful transistor radios in the world – they specialised in taking American inventions and making them smaller and better, and then exporting them all over the world. As Sony made transistor radios smaller and smaller until they were easily portable, sales boomed, all the way through to the end of the ‘50s. This got Sony enough money to invest heavily in diversifying and building more and more new products, and the rest is history.

Since then, Sony has had many notable products: the Walkman and Discman portable music players, the Minidisc music format, the Playstation video game consoles and even a robotic pet dog, AIBO. Today, Sony is a giant not only in electronics, but also in entertainment, with a movie studio (Sony Pictures), a record label (Sony Music), a video game division (Sony Computer Entertainment) and far more besides. Overall, the Sony Group of companies is one of the largest in Japan, and is also up there with the biggest companies in the world.

Sony moved into laptops with the VAIO brand in 1997, and again found instant success. Originally, VAIO was a brand of desktop and laptop computers, but Sony stopped making the desktop models after the laptops became a runaway success. They built a reputation for high-quality components, good bundled software, low weight and long battery life, making it the laptop of choice among many high-end Windows users.

Sony Laptops - Are they value for money?

It used to be the case that Sony laptops were very much better than others – they had much better build quality, better components and so on

It used to be the case that Sony laptops were very much better than others – they had much better build quality, better components and so on. Lately, though, Sony has been cutting a few corners to try to maximise its profitability, believing that once the Sony label is on something, their reputation will win through and they will be able to sell mediocre laptops at high prices.

To a certain extent, this is true. There are still plenty of buyers who remember Sony’s glory days and have stuck with them out of loyalty and genuine conviction that their Sony really is better than the competition. And while it might be better than the very cheapest laptop out there, a Sony laptop is really no longer any match for the best, and certainly not the laptop of choice for running Windows as it used to be.

Of course, all this doesn’t so much apply if you buy only from the very top of Sony’s range, where the laptops are generally just as good as they ever were, but even more expensive. Sony’s strategy has been to try to make normal laptops and top-end luxury ones at the same time, which basically results in the Sony laptops people want being the ones that are priced for people who’ll pay anything – Apple have a similar strategy for their iBooks and MacBooks.

However, if you can get your hands on a top-end Sony laptop, you will notice a genuine difference in quality. The components are very, very good, the case is high quality, it’s small and rugged and everything fits together well. It’s just a shame that they can’t make all their laptops like that. So, beware: while Sony do make good laptops, the Sony name itself is no longer a universal badge of quality, and you need to do more research and read reviews before you buy anything that today’s Sony produces.

Playstation Move Heroes is a Sony PlayStation 3 Platform game, written by Nihilistic.

Guide to Playstation Move Heroes on the PlayStation 3

The concept for PlayStation Move Heroes is the same as putting together three legitimate franchises and rolling them into a single game, without the absurdly high budget. The result? A casual game that is fast proving to be one of PlayStation’s staples. There is no non-sense and complicated approach to this game. In fact, the plot is very easy to grasp with recognizable characters and a basic control system that makes the most out of the PlayStation Move controller’s capacity.

The best way to describe PlayStation Move Heroes, which is developed by Nihilistic Software and is published by SCEA, is that it merges into one game world that of Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, and Sly Cooper & his buddy Bently into one. All of these various elements are combined together into an action game that also offer lots of puzzle elements. As for the game atmosphere, it is a cross between Disney and Final Fantasy with an RPG-styled story for a bold yet successful take on establishing a new era in the gaming industry.

If one would hear the game PlayStation Move Heroes on the PS3 though, the gameplay concept should be a giveaway. Therefore, the gameplay is designed specifically around the Move although one that is fairly low key. In the game, you will find lots of action-based mini games to explore across up to 40 different levels. The game also supports two player co-op, which is fitting since the game features three different duos to choose from. The main objective for players of PlayStation Move Heroes on the PS3 is to take down an evil force that is trying to enslave an alien race who had no intentions of stirring trouble.

Word of caution though: PlayStation Move Heroes for the PS3 is more than just a collection of mini games. The developer has taken to great lengths to ensure that all of these games are able to come together smoothly. The three duos will find themselves exploring various arenas that were all inspired by or taken from the franchises were these characters were taken from, giving a bit of familiarity into these characters despite being in an entirely new game. Depending on which mini games you choose to play, you will be able to control any of the three duos.

Players though will only be able to control one character at a time, while the second character is available for the second player to control. This second character is intended to help you out during missions, such as throwing grenades at enemies or collecting puzzle pieces you need for constant progress. The focus on co-op play in PlayStation Move Heroes offers a fun yet dynamic playing experience.

There are several playing modes available in PlayStation Move Heroes to add more diversity into the game. One example is Whip Mode. This particular mode works just like any platforming game wherein players can use the analog control of the Move to determine your character’s move in the game. You can snap back at your enemies and timing is critical here to cause maximum damage. This is one of the purest examples of why this technology is a must on the PlayStation console, especially since it opens up more possibilities into the gameplay. In another mode called Gun, players have the ability to use guns the way they do with the whip. However, you need to collect crystals in addition to battling with your enemies. Another mode available in PlayStation Move Heroes is called Melee, wherein players can navigate around the same area several times using any of the weapons available for each character to destroy boxes and enemies alongside.

In case a player finds a given mission a little too hard, the characters are equipped with special moves that they can use on such instances. Clank, for instance, have the ability to zap nearby objects using the disc provided that he is close enough. Meanwhile, Bentley’s special ability prove to be really useful since he has indicators that tell you where the aliens could be hiding!

Aside from the basic challenges available to play in PlayStation Move Heroes, there are also Diamond challenges. They are characterized by their extra level of difficulty, while also having the ability to collect hidden items or other collectibles. You can play single or co-op on these missions and have the chance to appear on the leaderboards.

PlayStation Move Heroes has started a new genre in the gaming industry, wherein it provides a middle ground between serious and casual games. It has elements of both and mixing them into one unique game that is sure to keep you glued from start to finish. It will no doubt be one of the PS3’s much awaited debut this year.

Michael Jackson The Experience is a Sony PlayStation 3 Party Fun game, written by Ubisoft Montreal.

Guide to Michael Jackson The Experience on the PlayStation 3

When it comes to the music scene, there is no other artist who has been able to change the face of music industry as much as Michael Jackson has. His death in 2009 certainly was a shock not just to his friends, family, and fans, but to the entire music and entertainment industry. To honor his huge imprint on the music industry, a new game has been developed to help fans relive his musical glory once again on the PS3 via the Michael Jackson The Experience.

A video game trailer for The Michael Jackson Experience debuted during the 2010 Tokyo Game Show wherein gaming fans were treated a short glimpse into what this title has in store for them. This rhythm game is delivered to fans by Ubisoft wherein you can make your dream of becoming like the King of Pop a reality.

This Spring, put on your dancing shoes as The Michael Jackson Experience is bound to add more musical sensation on the PS3. The best part about this new game from Ubisoft is that it does not limit itself to a musical game, but rather shifts into a full performance gaming. Fans have seen dancing games in the past, and so have they singing games. But these two together? Rarely. And this is what makes this game truly stand out as it will be the first time that both singing and dancing will be simultaneously integrated into a single game that will offer a whole new challenge, even for Michael Jackson fans.

The integration of the PlayStation Move technology into the PS3 version for The Michael Jackson Experience has already been confirmed. Meanwhile, PS3 gamers will also get a microphone peripheral to go with it since they will exclusively get a separate singing mode for this version.

All of the dance routines that were incorporated into this game were all developed from scratch. However, Michael Jackson's videos will be played on the background to provide dancing inspiration for all gamers performing the song. The choreographers who developed these dance routines for the game were also the same dancers who closely worked with Michael Jackson himself, when it comes to his dancing routines. Thus, this is the closest that you can get to performing like the music icon himself.

There are two scoring options available for Michael Jackson The Experience, which will be categorized depending on the skill level of a player. One is for Michael Jackson, which is for highly skilled dancers or gamers. And the other one is for Backup Dancers, which is intended for casual gamers only. You must follow the dance move prompts that appear on the right of your screen, while those playing via the Michael Jackson scoring option must follow the dance move prompts shown on the left side of the screen. However different the scoring option you have chosen, the video on the TV screen will always feature Michael Jackson himself with three backup dancers.

The Michael Jackson Experience has incorporated all the latest technologies in gaming control systems, such that it has been revealed that this rhythm game will also be using the new Playstation Move controller. However, there are no specific details given yet about how the Move will be used for this game.

On the technical aspect of this game, there are a few issues encountered with the visuals. It has the tendency to become a bit blurry or indistinctive. However, this seems to be done on purpose because Ubisoft wanted players to focus their attention on the onscreen avatar to make it easier to follow dance move prompts. Sadly though, beginners might encounter a learning curve with this one as the prompts are difficult to understand and follow at the beginning. How much more when you also have to integrate the singing aspect to it? However, it could all take a bit of practice until you learn how to master your moves according to the prompts and be able to focus on the singing aspect simultaneously. You can rest assured though that it will be a fun learning process.

Michael Jackson's career and music will be forever immortalized through this game, which honors some of his best tunes of all time. Now, PS3 fans will get the unique opportunity to sample those hits and recreate his trove of dance moves that only the King of Pop can introduce. With these songs immortalized and reintroduce to the future generations via this rhythm game, then you can expect his legacy to live on.
