A Notebook PC, also known as a laptop, is ideal for carrying with you when travelling or allowing you to easily carry your work with you when on the move. Traditionally, though, the notebook PC has been more costly than desktop computers with decreased performance. However, advances in the technology inside your computer and wireless technology have dramatically increased. This increase in technology has seen more powerful machines emerge at reduced prices.

When you are shopping for a notebook PC you should consider the reasons you want to purchase one and exactly what you will use it for. In many cases, the most important thing will be a combination of performance, price and accessibility. If you are intending to use your notebook computer for work then the important issues will be the software that is already installed, the package that comes with the computer and the Internet access capabilities.

Wireless Internet has truly come a very long way and this advance is obviously to the benefit of the user. You can take your laptop wherever you go and easily access the Internet. This means you can send and receive files with very little difficulty and conduct your work on the move.

Be warned that notebook computers do differ greatly in specification. Always look at the size and type of processor as well as the size of hard drive and RAM type and size before you make your final decision. Shopping online allows you the convenience of researching each one that you are interested in, without feeling like you are being forced to make a quick decision. There are also some sites that give you the added convenience of comparing different models side by side. This is by far the best way to comparison shop for any type of product and it will make it much easier when shopping for a notebook computer.

Need To Learn About Computers

Computers are a part of today's bustling world and play a role in everybody's life, young or old, whether they like it or not. A version of a computer, whether it be highly technologically advanced or not can be found in household appliances such as refrigerators, ovens, toasters and microwave ovens. Computers are a part of today's bustling world and play a role in everybody's life, young or old, whether they like it or not. A version of a computer, whether it be highly technologically advanced or not can be found in household appliances such as refrigerators, ovens, toasters and microwave ovens. Cars have their own unique kind of computers, as do televisions, DVD players and so much more. But when we think computer what comes to mind first is generally what is known as a PC (or personal computer). Almost every household has at least one and most companies could not be without one today. So much is done on the computer and over the computer.

A personal computer can mean so many things to so many people and it has a variety of functions. For students it's great for doing research using the Internet as well as typing up essays and papers for school. The Internet is a tremendous resource for anyone wanting to learn about practically any subject from animals to authors and everything in between. And what of e-mail? Twenty, thirty years ago no one could have conceived of the idea that a person could sit down in front of a computer screen and type a message to someone who is close or far away and then send it to them and have it received almost instantly! It's quite an amazing development for our world. And for those who enjoy solitary recreational pursuits, there are a variety of games that can be played on computers. One can also watch movies and listen to music via the use of a computer.

A computer is often thought of as a machine that processes information in a timely manner and is very general-purpose in its application. An individual types information into the computer through the use of the keyboard as well as the mouse and watches what he/she is typing materialize on the computer screen. The computer then begins the process of sorting through the data it is receiving and processing it as is necessary. The computer user can then save what he sees in front of him on the hard drive of the computer or onto a floppy disk or CD. If saved to the hard drive then the information cannot be used on any other computer but if saved on a disk that information has now become portable and can be used on other computers and not just that one in particular.

Every computer contains certain elements which in brief include the CPU or central processing unit or the brain of the desktop computer, the memory where information is stored, the motherboard or main circuit board, the power supply which regulates electricity going through the computer, the hard drive, or permanent storage, the operating system, or basic software, the integrated drive electronics controller or IDE, the peripheral component interconnect bus or PCI which allows other items to plug into it, the small computer system or SCSI which allows devices such as scanners to be plugged into it, the accelerated graphics port or AGP which is used by the graphics card which in turn translates visual information from the computer into a format it can read. And last but certainly not least is the sound card, which allows the computer to record as well as play anything with an audio element to it such as a CD that is accompanied by music.

Laptop Computers

A laptop is a personal computer which is portable. It may also be known as a notebook. The typical laptop will only weight a few pounds and will generally have an internal battery as well as a power adapter.

A laptop is a personal computer which is portable. It may also be known as a notebook. The typical laptop will range in weight from 1 to 3 kilograms, and will generally have an internal battery as well as a power adapter. While most laptops are portable, few can currently match the power of the most expensive desktops, though this will likely change as technology continues to advance. The word laptop was first introduced in 1983, and was used to refer to the Gavilan SC.

Despite the name, most laptops should not be placed in your lap if it is not covered, because they can get hot, and can even burn skin that is held against it for extended periods of time. The typical laptop can be powered by one battery, and the power adapter can power the battery when it is plugged into a wall outlet. A laptop can perform many of the same tasks as a PC, but they tend to be limited. They will have the same internal devices which are seen in desktops, but they will be much smaller in size. Most laptops will have a screen which uses a liquid crystal display.

Most manufacturers have designed their laptops to work with a keyboard and mouse, and they will also have a touch pad that can be used to move around the cursor on the screen. Laptops come in three varieties, and these are based on the size. An ultraportable laptop will generally weigh less than 1.7 kilograms, while a thin and light laptop will weigh up to 2.8 kilograms, and a medium sized laptop will weigh up to 3.5 kilograms. The idea for the laptop existed prior to the invention of the personal computer, and was first conceived during the 1970s. The very first laptop was the Osborne 1, and it was released in 1981.

While the Osborne 1 was massive in comparison to contemporary laptops, it was revolutionary for its time, because it allowed people to carry their data with them, and the computer didn't have to be left in a single location. However, the Osborne 1 was so large that it was not possible to run it on a battery. Most laptops today now use lithium ion batteries. While laptops have a few advantages over their desktop counterparts, they have some disadvantages as well. Unlike desktops, they are limited in their ability to be upgraded. As of this writing, their is no form factor for laptops, and the costs and technical issues involved with making them easy to upgrade aren't feasible.

The only parts of most laptops that can easily be upgraded are the hard drive and RAM. In addition to this, laptops are expensive to repair if they are damaged, and they are also easy to steal due to their small size. Stolen laptops are a common cause for identity theft. While the use of the USB port has allowed laptops to be upgraded to some degree, it will typically reduce their portability. Historically, the performance of laptops has always been low when they were compared to desktops in the same price range.

There are various accessories that could help operating a computer easier. The mouse is just an example of an accessory which makes navigation simple with just one click. However, most of these accessories have short “lifespan” and can be considered disposable. This is when the accessories can become bothersome.

What are you to do, when in the middle of an important document, your mouse decides to “die”? Would you worry? Would you panic and run to the nearest store? What if it’s night time and the stores are closed and you are rushing up your work?

On your keyboard, immediately press CTRL + S simultaneously to save whatever it is you’re doing. That way, you don’t lose your work. This is a common and one of the most familiar tasks without using the mouse. If the mouse is not functioning and you need to do something important but you don’t have the time to repair the mouse or change it, you can actually still do your work even with just the keyboard around. Here are some key combinations you need to navigate your way through your PC sans the mouse:

Ctrl + O – to open a file or document
Ctrl + B – to use the “Bold” feature of fonts
Ctrl + I – to italize fonts
Ctrl + U – to underline texts in a document
Ctrl + X – to cut texts, cells, or icons from files
Ctrl + W – to close existing windows
Ctrl + R – to align document to the right
Ctrl + L – to align document to the left
Ctrl + E – to align document to the center (especially in Word Documents)
Ctrl + Z – to undo last action done in a document
Ctrl + Y – to redo last action done in a document
Shift F7 – to prompt the Thesaurus tool in a document
F7 – to prompt the spelling and grammar check tool in a document
F12 – or save as, to save same document with another filename or to another drive
Windows + D - shows desktop
Alt + Tab – switches you from one window to another
F5 – refreshes your browser when it seems to have stopped moving (when you are using the Internet)
Ctrl + Esc – prompts the “Start Menu” when you are using the old 101-key keyboard without the Windows keys on it.
F6 – enables you to change the URL on the address field when you are using the Internet.
Shift + Tab – when you need to go back to a previous cell (in a spreadsheet) or entry in a form (in the Internet)
Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert – to paste copied text to another document
Windows + F – when you need to find and open a file recently saved
Windows + Pause/Break – to directly open and view your system properties without going through the control panel windows
Windows + E – to directly open and view Windows Explorer without going though the Start Menu
Alt + F4 – to prompt shut down menu

When you get used to using these shortcuts, you will certainly be able to finish the task you are doing even without the mouse. And this ability will make you look like a computer whiz.

Keep Your Notebook Compuer Longer! A Safety and Care Guide for Laptop Computers

Want to extend the life of your notebook computer? Here are some quick tips to keep your laptop safe and secure during use or travel...

Laptop computers - also known as notebook computers - have become an important part of our lives. They are more affordable than ever and as popular as cell phones. A laptop computer has a versatility that the home PC does not provide. With its smaller size it is portable and easier to carry along. This makes it convenient to use in many situations. You can take it to work and back home as well as take it on more extensive travel.

Laptop computers are not just for older working people anymore. Because of its ease of use, more young people are using them for school and college. They can access the Internet almost anywhere and provide updates for work, research, and even games.

Taking Care of Your Laptop or Notebook Computer

It is important to take care of your laptop computer and protect it from accidents. They are designed for heavy use but common sense will tell you that you need to be prudent in your treatment.

One of the first recommendations is to buy a case designed for a notebook computer. These are made with padding to protect your laptop computer from wear and tear and protection in case you drop it. It is not good to carry your notebook computer unprotected or in a purse or backpack. You can easily find a case by shopping online where you will find 1000s of products to choose from.

Another important tip for laptop computer care is to keep food and drinks away from it. Even a small amount of liquid is enough to ruin the delicate components in the laptop computer. It means almost certain replacement, and most warranties will not cover it. It is not worth the risk to lose all your data.

Protect Your Notebook Computer

When using your laptop computer you should always use a surge protector. An electrical surge may not hurt it one time, but continued surges could destroy it. If you are using a cable or dial-up modem during a storm, be sure to unplug it. Lightening can travel through phone lines and ruin the laptop computer.

You should not leave your notebook computer in a cold environment. This can cause condensation when you return it to a warm area and could cause the circuitry to short it out. If it has been in the cold, let it warm up before turning it on.

When traveling with your laptop computer, be sure to charge all your batteries before you leave. You might not know when you will be able to charge them again. On a long trip, take extra batteries to avoid this problem. By shopping online, you can find the supplies you need as well as other products such as iPods, jewelry, games, toys, sporting goods, pet supplies and cell phones - even free gifts.

Do not leave your notebook computer unattended and do not check it as baggage when flying. Keep it in your hands at all times to avoid the possibility of theft. Don't try to disassemble or repair your laptop computer; this is a job for professionals. You may inadvertently cause more damage by your lack of knowledge.

Shopping Online

When you are ready to buy a laptop computer, cell phone, iPod, or other electronics, shopping online will provide everything you need.

Sony Laptops Are Still Part Of The Sony Family

Sony laptops are among the most well known laptops on today’s market

Sony laptops are among the most well known laptops on today’s market. Sony is a name that over time has established itself as creating a solid product with a stellar reputation. In addition to all the good press that Sony has, Sony is known for making the best ‘small’ laptops. This means that they pack a ton of features into a much smaller packet and do it better than most laptop companies around.

If you are in the market for a laptop it makes perfect sense to look around, compare your options and decide on the laptop that will ultimately work best for you. There are many companies out there that offer similar products; some are superior, some inferior, some at a premium price, and still others at bargain prices. The laptop industry isn’t always an industry where you get what you pay for.

When choosing a laptop, it is never a good idea to buy what others think you should buy, buy the laptop that has the features that you need at a price that you can afford. Don’t buy a laptop that has bells and whistles you will never utilize. Perhaps, that is what I like most about Sony and the products they offer. Sony Laptops aren’t about stuffing computers full of features that will never be useful to the average consumer. Instead, they build a computer that the average consumer can use and offer upgrades beyond their basic computer setup.

When you buy a Sony laptop you are not only buying a great laptop, you are buying a solid name from a company that over time has proven it will stand behind its products and services. Sony products have been around for years and the company is on solid ground, they will be around for years to come. Their laptops are made with the same attention to detail and technological evolution that has made Sony famous, that being said, it’s a fair assessment that a Sony laptop is a good investment as far as laptops go.

Is Your PC Crowding Your Desk?

When your PC eats up almost the entire space in your computer table, it’s time to have a little re-organizing. Desktop computers, especially those bulky CPU’s and monitors could eat up quite a space which could be a room for other essentials such as folder stackers, telephone or fax machine. Nowadays, bulky personal computers can be really heavy to the eyes, especially since in today’s technology, the adage, “bulk is out, thin is in” is the mainstream.

Let’s start with your computer table. Its size may vary depending on your design. It may be wide enough to accommodate two “bulky” PC sets, or it could barely hold one, and you don’t have enough space left for the keyboard or the mouse.

First things first, remove all unnecessary files, folders, papers, trash, coffee mugs and saucers, ashtrays, etc. on your desk. Clear the area. Your computer table should be just that, a computer table and not a hodgepodge of everything else. However, top designers say that there are some essential things that should be within reach (especially for an office desk).

The telephone, for one should be within reach. Some very important and frequently used documents could be stacked inside an upright holder which can cover only a little space and is still within reach compared to when just piled up on top of the table.

However, if the area is already clear, but you can still barely fit a small pen holder on top of it, you should think of getting yourself a bigger desk or… a new set of personal computer.

Super space-saving computers have flooded the market nowadays. Try checking out flat monitors to replace your old, bulky one. Have your CPU re-designed or buy one of those small and slim tower CPUs. Small and compact keyboards are also available, reducing the size of a regular keyboard to almost a half.

And, if you do not have a place to slide your mouse in, try using a trackball mouse. That way, it occupies just that small space and you don’t have to glide it across a wider area.

Or have all of those pieces in one super sleek laptop notebook. People on the go prefer to have a laptop which they can take along whenever and wherever they go. And nowadays, laptops are not at all far behind in terms of technical capabilities vis-à-vis PCs.

It is always a good thing to see a clear and organized computer table. It would compel one to work well, without the mess adding up to the already full and cluttered working brain. And, admit it, it’s nice not seeing those bulky gadgets anymore. It helps ease the heaviness in the mind as well.

Used Laptops Could Be Your Best Option

Article Body:
Most people who want to purchase a new laptop look at brand new laptop computers. There are many used laptops available. Is buying a used laptop a good idea? It depends on where you look and what you need in a computer. Used laptops do not come with warranties and usually have no guarantee. However, if you are looking for a laptop for basic functions, this could be the way to go.

Most used laptop computers were sold so that the previous owners could upgrade to a newer model. Others are for sale because companies upgrade their computers frequently. In some cases, you can find top quality laptops at a fraction of the price. If you want to consider purchasing a used laptop, the first step is to make certain that you are buying from a reputable dealer. There are numerous dealers that sell used laptops online. Online marketplaces often do have larger quantities and set prices for their used laptops. Some may even offer limited warranties. If you choose this route, check into the dealer and the computer offer carefully before making a purchase. Most of these dealers sell computers that are good brands that have also been upgraded in some way. In all cases, a used laptop should have the memory completely erased and ready to go when you buy it. Many used laptops can be found on online auctions. This could be a risky way to purchase a computer. Prices for used laptops can vary greatly depending on the seller. If you are using an online auction to buy a used laptop make sure you ask the seller plenty of questions before bidding, and check their seller reputation on the auction site. Be wary of any seller that has poor seller feedback.

Another thing to consider when looking at used laptops will be if the computer has the ability to be upgraded. Make sure the laptop computer you are looking to purchase can have the upgrades you want. Older computers may have less memory and will need more memory to make it useful. If the asking price of a used laptop is low enough, buying more memory may not be cost prohibitive. Also, you will need to check to which types of programs are already installed on the computer. If you will have to purchase expensive programs such as a Windows program, you may not come out on top with the purchase. If you will need to access the internet, make sure the used laptop has the capability to do so. Some older models may not be able to access WiFi or a high-speed internet access without upgrades.

Before looking at used laptops, remember that these computers are not certified. If you experience problems, used laptops usually do not offer any type of warranty or guarantee. There is no guarantee of how long the laptop will work. Also, remember that used laptops may need repairs or part replacements. In addition, if you get a used laptop and have problems, you usually have no recourse with the seller.

It's Very Hard To Imagine A World Without Computers!

It's very hard to imagine a world without computers! Everywhere you look computers are at work attempting to provide one service or another and make our lives easier. Computers, in one form or another can be found in vehicles, from cars, trucks and motorcycles to larger scale methods of transportation such as airplanes and trains. It's very hard to imagine a world without computers! Everywhere you look computers are at work attempting to provide one service or another and make our lives easier. Computers, in one form or another can be found in vehicles, from cars, trucks and motorcycles to larger scale methods of transportation such as airplanes and trains. They are in your television set, your VCR, your toaster oven, etc. But when we conjure up the image of a computer usually our first thought is of a PC, otherwise known as a personal computer.

Personal computers can be purchased either as desktops or laptops and have so many different uses. Most of us would be lost without one at home or work or both! Many public libraries provide computers for the use of patrons, as it is a service that is invaluable to every one of us. E-mail or electronic mail is the quickest way to communicate with one another.

With one click on the "send" button a message is sent through cyberspace and arrives at the recipient's in box in a matter of seconds. Students of all ages reap the benefits of the Internet when it comes time to look up information for school papers.

And very few people would disagree that typing papers and reports on a computer is far superior to typing on those old rickety typewriters of yester years! And computers carry the added advantage of being able to save work for future use, which cuts down on a lot of headaches.

Computers process information and in some ways are very complex while in other ways are very simple to understand. To describe how they do this in brief, as a person types a series of words into the computer by way of the keyboard and with help from the mouse, they are able to view what they're typing on the computer monitor (or computer screen) in front of them.

What could be simpler? In the meantime the inside of the computer is very busy going through the information that is being entered into it and organizing it in a fashion that will be understandable to the computer user. The individual busy typing away has the opportunity to save the work they are doing in two ways, by way of saving it to the hard disk or drive or by saving it to a floppy disk or CD. Some people choose to do both, which is often wise to do.

All computers are made with certain pieces of machinery that enable it to do its job. Describing it in a general way, every computer comes complete with its brain, or central processing unit (CPU), the memory bank (which is self explanatory, think of your own memory), the main circuit board (often referred to as a motherboard), the power supply which takes care of all electrical functions, the hard drive which is the permanent storage unit of the computer, the standard software (otherwise known as the operating system), the IDE (integrated drive electronics controller), the PCI (or peripheral component interconnect bus), the SCSI, pronounced oddly enough as "skuzzy" which is the small computer system from which scanners or printers can be plugged into, and the graphic card and sound card which takes care of visual information and aural data respectively. In order to utilize a graphics card one needs an AGP (or accelerated graphics port) in the computer.

A Laptop of My Own

Working from home day after day and night after night on a borrowed laptop is no fun. Especially when it is borrowed back off you. So, for that reason, I feel the time has come for a laptop of my own. Or do I want a desktop? A PC or Apple Mac? Or maybe one of those little palm-held jobs would look the part; after all, it would fit neatly in my handbag.

After much consideration and deliberation, I go full circle and end up back at the laptop. But where do I start? What are my requirements? Well, my business is a small one, so I don't really require anything top of the range. Yet! I'll use it mainly for article writing and up-dating my website. Oh! And maybe a spot of shopping! And I will be the only one using it. Probably!

So I have a look on the internet to find out what other people are buying. And what manufacturers are selling. Suddenly the English language becomes muffled jargon. Do I really know what I want?

What memory is required? My husband, a programmer, insists 2GB is what is called for. Added to that is the essential 2.0TB of storage! Whatever all that means! I'm not so sure! I fear he may have his own reasons for these specifications...

Dell is mentioned; so I go online for a browse. Having found one within budget that appeals and appears to tick all the boxes, I am suddenly confronted with an array of extras - all of which serve to push up the price.

So I pull the reigns in. Perhaps I don't really need a lap-top of my own. Maybe my husband's will suffice after all.
Neither a borrower nor a lender be - well so much for Shakespeare - it seems to work for us...

Some often have sales that are only available through their website. If you do choose to purchase a laptop from the Internet, make sure you are making the purchase through a reputable dealer. If you are uncertain about the reputation of an online dealer, it is usually better to research the company or go with another store.

Laptops give you unbelievable portability for all of your computing needs, but as the need for communication grows more each day you need a computer that will keep you in touch. There are many options for portable computing. Laptops now come in many different sizes to match your specific needs.

Large or small screens are the biggest factor affecting the size of a laptop. Extra options like media drives and larger batteries will add overall weight to laptops. The current trend for any traveler is to get the smallest computer that will get the job done. Airports have wireless internet access available, so a wireless network or wi-fi card is a good option. Large screens used to be popular but strict travel regulations have caused many people to get smaller screens. This will make the computer easier to deal with at security check points.

Major reasons for the trend in “less is more” with laptop computers, is that they have become simply more of a tool and less of a novelty. Most basic computers are very capable in running any business application and have the necessary options for general use. Basic laptops have also dropped in price dramatically. The options have become the expensive part as competition grows fierce to have the lowest priced computer available. People are now buying computers more frequently with less options because it is more cost effective that buying the newest technology. Fast processors and large hard drives start out very expensive and quickly become standard features on basic laptops. You can keep more up to date by getting a new laptop every two years instead of getting the newest technology and trying to make it last for 4 years. Anyways, most laptops show a performance loss after about two years if the hard drive is not defragmented and formatted. It may not sound cheaper to buy a computer more often, but it also what you buy. Doing a little shopping around and assessing what you really need in a computer can save you the money that you need to buy one more often.

Do the world’s poor children really need a $100 laptop?

The chairman and founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab recently launched the $100 laptop to the world’s media. Is it necessary?

MIT rolled out a non-profit association, called One Laptop Per Child, to design, manufacture and distribute laptops that will be provided to various governments at cost price and issued to children by participating schools on a basis of one laptop per child. These machines will be rugged, Linux-based and so energy-efficient that hand cranking alone can generate sufficient power for operation.

The internet connectivity question is addressed in a few different ways, including the use of Wi-Fi, WiMax, 3G and satellites, as well as fibre, coaxial cable and plain old telephony. Competition, deregulation and the fact that the developing world is now the only new telecommunications market, will all perhaps contribute to wider reaching availability, greater bandwidth and, most importantly in these countries, lower connectivity costs.

The solution offered is a $100 laptop: a durable, versatile machine at a price the developing world can afford. The fact that this has been achieved is actually a remarkable achievement, the very notion of which until very recently was shunned by industry leaders as impossible.

The strongest argument in favour of this cheap laptop idea rests on the laurel that the greatest assets of a people are its children, and so the highest social priority is on the education of these children. Throughout disease, natural disasters, war and poverty, education features as the primary solution to the problem.

Most educators would argue that effective learning stems from a fundamental level of personal curiosity about a subject, and in a sense the ability to self-teach. The key point here is not so much what each child knows so far, it is rather the perspective that they can bring to bear on a problem. It is well known from case studies that network learning, augmented by technology, computers and Internet connectivity, bears heavy fruit in academic terms.

The economics of a $100 laptop base around the following: Around half the purchase price of a new laptop is taken up by the cost of sales, marketing, distribution, and of course the ever shameless profit-margin. By sidestepping the entire retail market and distributing directly to governments in the absence of profit-driven aims a huge chunk of the price per model is evaporated.

Physically the most expensive aspect would be the display. The use of an MIT technology called E-Ink that offers the potential to be as low as 10 cents per square inch and offer daylight readable clear resolution is promising. The processor, memory and power can be stripped down, as the functionality of the machine need not be so advanced beyond surfing, email and word processing all as open-source, slimmed down software that takes up little computing resources.

It’s now without doubt that the $100 laptop will happen. As to whether it’s a good idea? Everything about says yes, although the sociologists have yet to gather their argument on this one it seems.

If you are the owner of a laptop computer, you know how frustrating it can be when you are working on the laptop and your battery is low. If you are constantly on the go, it is sometimes difficult to find a place to plug in your computer to let it recharge. There are a few things that you can do to help you take care and extend the life of your laptop battery.

General caution should be observed when running the battery of your laptop. A laptop should be plugged in to the AC adaptor whenever possible. This will ensure that your laptop battery is always charged and ready to go when it is needed. Another tip is to not expose your laptop to extreme weather conditions, especially very cold temperatures. A cold battery will run much slower than one that is warm. Also, try not to use your laptop for long periods of time without recharging the battery. This can cause information to be lost if the battery sudden stops working.

When using your battery on your laptop, remember use as little power as you can by adjusting the settings on the laptop. This will make your computer go inactive when not in use for a certain amount of time. Adjusting the power setting is easy if you go into the control panel and set the display time. It is also possible to adjust the brightness of the screen display to help the life of the laptop battery. Remember to turn programs off that you are not using. This will waste battery usage quicker. Also, running movies and videos will quickly drain the battery charge.

When using your laptop battery you will want to make sure you check the battery charge frequently. Charge your laptop as soon as you see the battery getting low. Whenever you can, plug in your computer. It is a good idea to always plug in your computer so that it is ready to go. Also, take care of your battery. It is important to clean the laptop battery and keep it free of dust and debris. Using canned air or a cotton swab on a regular basis can do this. The battery will run longer if it is cleaned frequently.

Another tip is to have an extra battery on hand. These are easily purchased. Have at least one fully charged at all times for a quick battery change. Some laptops can run with two batteries. Most laptops are also compatible with external batteries that can easily be added and changed when necessary. Battery charges that work in the car are also good options for anyone taking their laptops on trips. Also, if you are purchasing a new laptop computer, consider buying a smaller, lightweight version. These are more efficient and are able to run longer on a battery charge than the larger laptop versions. Following these basic tips can help extend the amount of time your computer can run with a battery.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 and Samsung SF510-A01 Laptops

This review takes a peak at the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 and the Samsung SF510-A01 ultra portable laptops.
Lenovo's IdeaPad U260 is a 12.5-inch ultra-portable laptop that offers outstanding design but some average performance characteristics.  You pay a premium for its design, as it costs $1,049.  The U260 comes with a standard one-year warranty on parts and labor.

For $1,049, you get the IdeaPad U260 configuration that comes with a 1.33 GHz Intel Core i5-470UM processor.  Do not confuse this particular processor with the regular line of i5's from Intel.  This is an ultra-low-voltage processor that supposedly offers better battery life.  As such, it is a tad sluggish, and not as fast as the standard Intel chips found in other laptops.  You can perform normal tasks like web surfing, document editing, multimedia viewing, and some light gaming, but do not expect exceptional speed.  The U260 also has 4 GB of DDR3 SDRAM for multitasking power.
Graphics on the IdeaPad U260 are supported by an Intel HD Graphics card.  The card will allow you to watch media and play some games, but it is not advanced enough to play more sophisticated games without any issues.  Storage is provided by a 320 GB hard drive, which should be enough space for most users' data.  Despite its use of an ultra-low-voltage processor, the U260's battery life is not all that impressive.  When put under duress, the laptop offers under three hours of usage on its four-cell battery.  Laptops in the ultra-portable class are expected to have more longevity, as they are seen as machines ideal for travel and use on the go.  For the operating system, you get Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit pre-installed.
The feature set on the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is solid.  It does not have an optical drive, but that is due to the sacrifice in size that the ultra-portable laptop makes.  It does have a 0.3-megapixel webcam and microphone for video chatting.  For fast Internet connections, there is integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi.  Bluetooth is also on board for wireless use with compatible devices.  Surprisingly, there is no card reader on the U260.

The IdeaPad U260's design is extremely impressive, and by far its best aspect.  It's very thin and portable, measuring 12.5 inches wide by 8.1 inches deep by 0.7 inch thick.  The laptop weighs just 3 pounds.  The U260's lid and sides are coated with an attractive Clementine orange finish that makes the laptop stand out from its dull-colored competitors.  The orange accents and lid also mix well with the black interior.  The overall texture of the laptop on the exterior and interior is very pleasing as well, and offers a solid grip while toting it around.  The 12.5-inch display has a rather uncommon size, but it looks great and produces vivid, colorful graphics.  The integrated speakers are decent at best, and struggle to get loud.
The keyboard is spacious and features wide, concave keys.  The keys offer solid bounce and are very comfortable to type on.  The touch pad is a bit small, but does offer good responsiveness.  It also supports multi-touch gestures.  Connectivity is underwhelming on the U260.  The right side of the laptop features a VGA port, an Ethernet port, a HDMI port, and a USB port.  The left side has a headphone jack and a second USB port.  More USB ports would have been nice, as would an eSATA port and a card reader, since the laptop's sides seem to have room for more ports.
The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 has some great features, and some that are not so great.  The lack of battery life is a shame, especially considering the laptop's use of a ULV processor.  Some connectivity is lacking as well.  Still, those looking for an ultra-portable laptop with a superb design should take a strong look at the IdeaPad U260

5 Tips for Buying a Laptop

5 Tips for Buying a Laptop

Buying a laptop is a major investment decision.  As such it is not one that you should make lightly.  Below are 5 tips that will help prepare you for making the best and most well informed decision when buying a laptop.

Tip #1 Size Matters

Buying a laptop is a matter that requires some thought.  Consider the size and weight of the laptop.  How often will you be carrying your laptop?  Your answer will help determine which size and weight will best suit your needs.  If you will be carrying your laptop frequently, a lighter model will be preferable.

The keyboard is another area to consider when buying a laptop.  Why is the size of the keyboard important?  A larger laptop will have a slightly larger keyboard area.  But keep in mind that if you worry about your fingers or wrists taking on too much stress from typing on a keyboard that is too small, you may want this to be a main factor in your purchasing decision,

Tip #2 Choose Your Mouse

A laptop it will come with a built in touch pad, an alternative to the mouse, whereby the pad is controlled by the user’s finger movement.  For some people, this type of pad is uncomfortable and not easy to work with.  Before purchasing a laptop, determine what mouse options are available.  Test each one and determine which one best meets your needs.

Tip #3 Wireless Options

Today, when many people think laptop, they think “wireless”.  No doubt people want to make sure that their laptop computer will be able to access the Internet with a wireless connection.  Many try to account for this by ensuring that their laptop has potential upgrade options, such as room for an expandable PC card or a USB port.  However, since so many laptop users are looking for wireless connections, many of today’s laptops come pre-wired for wireless Internet.  All you need to do is activate your wireless Internet service, and your laptop will take it from there. So depending on your needs, choose your laptop whether it is capable of expanding or if it is already configured for wireless Internet.

Tip #4 Check for Ports

Peripheral equipment will be connected to your laptop through USB ports.  You will make your life much less complicated by ensuring that your laptop has adequate ports.  Connecting equipment such as printers, scanners, and digital cameras will be much simpler if you have the ports readily available.  If you are not sure, thoroughly read the specs for any laptop that you are considering purchasing.

Tip #5 Check Your Budget First

Finally, when buying a laptop, beware that you do not overspend.  First create your budget and stick to it.  When you think that you have found the laptop that you want, do not rush into it.  Wait a day and check over your budget, requirements, and see if you are still as excited about the laptop in the morning, as you were when the sales clerk was showing off its specs.  If you still feel that it is the laptop that you want to purchase, then go for it.
