Nutrition and Dental Health

Smiling GirlThere is no need in mentioning the importance of proper diet for good oral and dental health. Having shiny and beautiful teeth is strictly linked to good eating habits, as well as eating a rich and balanced diet. Undoubtedly, for normal development and good health, our teeth need certain nutrients, minerals and vitamins. That is why a lot of people, who are on diet and limit consumption of one or another food, sometimes have such problems as cavities, gum related problems, etc. That’s because natural protection, which helps our teeth in fighting against aggressive influence of dangerous bacteria, gets weakened.
First of all, for keeping your teeth in a good condition it is very important to eat dairy products with some small content of fats. Fats help our body in calcium digestion. Eating some small amounts of low-fat cheese, or cottage cheese mixed with a little of fruit or nuts, not less than two times a week can be very useful for boosting your dental health. Besides, it is recommended to eat some seafood and small amounts of fatty fish on a regular basis. These foods are great sources of the fats, which also assist in calcium digestion.
Bad Foods
Besides, it is essential to lower the consumption of foods which contain sugar and starch, especially such foods as sugary snacks or carbonated sugary drinks. When you eat such foods, they contact the existing bacteria in your mouth and favor the development of dental plague. There are also many foods containing dangerous acids, which can damage your teeth enamel. Certainly, you should not give up eating such foods completely, but remember that only regular brushing and flossing your teeth can help you minimize negative effects of these chemical substances on your dental health.
Also, you should remember that even if you use a toothpaste with good amounts of calcium and fluoride, it does not mean that your teeth do not need to receive more of natural fluoride or calcium with the foods you eat. No toothpaste can help you to achieve the same positive effects, which can be achieved by a healthy nutrition, because everything you take with meals stays in your body for much longer time, than your toothpaste. Therefore, brushing your teeth assists you in maintaining proper oral hygiene, and healthy nutrition should be your effective tool to prevent many possible risks and dental problems.

Flossing Alternatives: Toothpicks

Tooth PicksNot everyone enjoys flossing. Besides, many people could not master the art of flossing, so they continue hurting the soft tissues in their mouth when they attempt to floss. For such situations, there are effective and safe alternatives to flossing, including various tooth pick tools. There is a great number of woodsticks, advanced plastic soft tooth picks or brush picks, or even floss picks and special plague removers available online. It is very easy to learn using such dental care tools, and the effects of using these plague removers are almost the same as the effects of using the floss threat.
Some dentists and dental specialists even recommend using such plague removers as triangular tooth picks instead of regular flossing. They are convinced that picks can enter those places and nooks in the mouth, which are left unavailable for toothbrushes and floss. Another reason of such concern is our common laziness. Many people neglect regular flossing, but using tooth picks can be more attractive since usually it requires less time and efforts. At that, using toothpicks is especially effective for those people, who have large spaces between their teeth. However, the people who have periodontal disease have to be very careful while using toothpick tools.
It is interesting that holding a tooth pick with your hand is already considered to be something old-fashioned and ineffective. Holding a toothpick with your hand does not allow you reach all necessary places in your mouth (like the tongue side of your teeth and so on) and limits the space for moving your pick. Nowadays, you can buy a lot of advanced tooth picks with various unique designs and qualities, like special picks with xylitol, the picks with flexible edges, triangular picks or the picks of other shape which are easy to maneuver and use.
Undoubtedly, tooth picks are a great tool for dental care, but there are certain drawbacks connected with using them. In particular, an important disadvantage is inability of tooth picks to clean properly the space behind our last “wisdom” teeth, but flossing can do that. Those places require very careful cleaning because there are a lot of harmful bacteria get collected there, which can cause not only bad odor and plague, but more serious dental problems. That is why, according to the latest reseacrhes, the most effective way is to use all three methods for plague reomval: brushing, flossing and using toothpicks tools.

What You Need To Keep In Mind In Order To Keep Your Smile Gorgeous

Since our childhood we know the rules of effective dental care. Most of us brush two times a day, floss regularly and visit their dental care specialist once every 6 months. However, we still have plenty of dental problems and must spend a lot of money for improving our dental health. What do we do wrong? Below, check out the list of the most common misconceptions and risks
1. Excessive brushing. Many people tend to believe that the more they brush, the lower chances they have to develop one or another dental disease. This is a serious misconception and it is highly recommended to brush no more than 1-2 times a day, use soft brushes and proper toothpastes.
2. Brushing right after eating too sweet or too acidic foods. This is another wrong idea, to brush your teeth right after consuming acidic drinks or desserts.
3. Vinegar in salad dressings. Adding such products as vinegar or lemon juice to your salads is harmful to your teeth. Try to avoid having such type of salad dressings on a regular basis.
4. Diabetes. This disease is linked to increased levels of glucose in the body fluids, including saliva. This is why people with diabetes usually have poorer dental health if compared with those who do not have diabetes. Your tooth enamel becomes soft and very sensitive when under effect of acidic or too sweet materials, and scrubbing it with tooth brush will not lead to anything good. That is why it would be better to rinse your mouth with a mouthwash and brush your teeth in not less than 30 minutes after eating.
5. Tooth whitening procedures. Sometimes, whitening procedures which we do at home damage our tooth enamel to a great extent. Therefore, instead of using special home kits, choose to go to a specialist and reduce the risks of having dental problems.
6. Drinking too much of herbal teas. This is a real shocker, but some fruit-flavored herbal teas can be very acidic and cause tooth damage, according to British dentists from the University of Bristol Dental School. Choose to drink good old black or green teas which have numerous health benefits and positive effects on our dental health.
7. Consuming sports drinks. These products are packed with harmful acids and sugars which can help to boost energy levels. A research has shown that sports drinks are about 30 times more corrosive than water. Try to avoid using sports drinks.
8.Drinking white and red wine. Studies have shown that red wine causes stains and white wine cause tooth decay. Those who got used to benefit from high antioxidant content of wines should drink during a meal, rinse the mouth after drinking wine and possibly use a piece of cheese to neutralize negative effects of acids in wines.
9. Using eye drops. The scientists found out that using anti-inflammatory eye drops is also linked to worsening of the dental health and tooth decay. Specialists at the British Dental Health Foundation warn that using anti-inflammatory eye drops and some other prescription medications is linked to such problem and dry mouth, which is connected to insufficient amounts of saliva in the mouth and weakened protection against harmful acids and other chemical compounds. If you use eye drops and suffer from dry mouth, keep this condition under control.
10. Swimming in public pools. It is amazing but even such habit as swimming in public pools can increase your chances to suffer from tooth erosion. According to a study which involved 500 participants, it was discovered that about 66% of those had yellow teeth and other types of tooth damage as a result of permanent contact with chlorine in water. If you can’t refrain from swimming, try to always keep your mouth closed while swimming.
11. Playing video games. Specialists are convinces that those people who play lots of video games are more likely to eat unhealthy snacks, lose control on what they eat and give no importance to dental care.

Drugs and their effects

Australia is a drug-using society. The most common drugs used are alcohol, coffee, nicotine and various medications. Less commonly used are illegal drugs such as cannabis (marijuana), ecstasy, heroin and amphetamines (speed). What is a drug?
A drug is any substance, solid, liquid or gas, that brings about physical and/or psychological changes. The drugs of most concern in the community are those that affect the central nervous system. They act on the brain and can change the way a person thinks, feels or behaves. These drugs are known as "psychoactive drugs".
How are drugs classified?
Drugs are commonly classified according to their legal status or their effects on the central nervous system.
  • Legal and illegal drugs
Laws and regulations control the availability, quality and price of the "legal" drugs. For example, tobacco may not be sold to persons under the age of 18.
  • Illegal drugs
Because they are illegal, there are no price or quality controls on the illicit drugs such as heroin and ecstasy. This means that a user can never be sure that the drug they are taking is in fact what they think it is; for example, PMA (paramethoxyamphetamine), a toxic form of amphetamine, has been sold as ecstasy. The user also cannot be sure of a drug's strength or purity. Various batches of an illegally manufactured drug may have different mixtures of the drug and additives such as poisons, caffeine or even talcum powder.
Effects on the central nervous system
There are three main types of drug affecting the central nervous system.
Depressants
Depressants are drugs that slow down the functions of the central nervous system. Depressant drugs do not necessarily make a person feel depressed. They include:

  • Alcohol ("booze", "grog")
  • Cannabis ("pot", "dope", "mull")
  • Barbiturates, including Seconal, Tuinal and Amytal
  • Benzodiazepines (tranquilisers), "benzos", "tranx" such as Rohypnol, Valium, Serepax, Mogadon, Normison and Eupynos
  • GHB (Gamma-hydroxybutrate), or "fantasy"
  • Opiates and opioids, including heroin ("H", "smack"), morphine, codeine, methadone and pethidine
  • Some solvents and inhalants
In small quantities, depressants can cause the user to feel more relaxed and less inhibited. In larger quantities they can cause unconsciousness, vomiting and even death. Depressants affect concentration and coordination. They slow down a person's ability to respond to unexpected situations.
Stimulants
Stimulants act on the central nervous system to speed up the messages to and from the brain. They can make the user feel more awake, alert or confident. Stimulants increase heart rate, body temperature and blood pressure. Other effects include reduced appetite, dilated pupils, talkativeness, agitation and sleep disturbance. Mild stimulants include:

  • Ephedrine used in medicines for bronchitis, hay fever and asthma
  • Caffeine in coffee, tea and cola drinks
  • Nicotine in tobacco.
Stronger stimulants include:
  • Amphetamines, including illegal amphetamines ("speed", "crystal meth", "ice", "shabu")
  • Cocaine ("coke", "crack")
  • Ecstasy ("E", "XTC", "eccy")
  • Slimming tablets such as Duromine, Tenuate Dospan and Ponderax.
Large quantities of stimulants can "over-stimulate" the user, causing anxiety, panic, seizures, headaches, stomach cramps, aggression and paranoia. Prolonged use of strong stimulants can mask some of the effects of depressant drugs, such as alcohol, making it difficult for a person to judge their effects.
Hallucinogens
Hallucinogens affect perception. People who have taken them may believe they see or hear things that aren't really there, or what they see may be distorted in some way. The effects of hallucinogens vary a great deal, so it is impossible to predict how they will affect a particular person at a particular time.
Hallucinogens include:
  • Datura
  • Ketamine ("K", "Special K")
  • LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide; "trips", "acid", "microdots")
  • Magic mushrooms (psilocybin; "gold tops", "mushies")
  • Mescaline (peyote cactus)
  • PCP ('angel dust')
  • Cannabis is an hallucinogen as well as a depressant. Ecstasy can also have hallucinogenic qualities.
Some effects of hallucinogens include dilation of pupils, loss of appetite, increased activity, talking or laughing, emotional and psychological euphoria and wellbeing, jaw clenching, sweating, panic, paranoia, loss of contact with reality, irrational or bizarre behaviour, stomach cramps and nausea.
How do drugs affect a person?
The effects of a drug depend on the type of drug and a range of personal and environmental factors. Some factors to consider include:
  • How much of the drug is taken and how often. Generally, the greater the quantity taken, the greater the effect. Overdose occurs when the amount taken exceeds the body's ability to cope with the drug.
  • How the drug is taken. Generally, drugs that are injected or inhaled act very quickly and the effects are more intense. Snorting through the nose is the next fastest-acting method, while the effects of drugs eaten or swallowed take longer to occur.
  • A person's physical characteristics, such as height, weight and gender also influence how a drug affects them.
  • The proportion of body fat, rate of metabolism and, for women, stage of the menstrual cycle can all influence the intensity and duration of drug effects.
  • The person's mood and environment also plays a role. How a person is feeling and the social setting can have a significant impact on drug effects. A person is more likely to enjoy the experience in a comfortable social atmosphere than in a threatening environment.
  • Tolerance to the drug. The first time a person uses a drug, they have a very low tolerance and are likely to feel the effects very strongly. The more often the drug is taken, generally the less intense the effects will be. This means that larger amounts are needed to obtain the desired effect.
  • Other drugs used (poly drug use). Combining drugs can increase or alter the effects, often in unpredictable ways.
What problems can drug use cause?
Regardless of the drug used, there are many problems related to drug use, such as:
  • Family or relationship problems
  • Problems at work or school
  • Accidents
  • Legal problems
  • Financial problems
  • Health problems
  • Sexual problems
Drugs and pregnancy
Most psychoactive drugs can cross the placenta and affect the unborn child. Heavy and sustained use of some drugs during pregnancy may cause miscarriage, foetal distress or a range of other complications.
Drugs and driving
Driving safety requires mental alertness, clear vision, physical coordination and the ability to react appropriately. Drug use can affect these driving abilities and increase the risk of having a crash. The risk of having an accident is nine times greater when alcohol and drugs are used together than when a driver is drug-free.
One of the most concerning measures of drug-related harm in the community is the death toll. Drug use is a factor in about one in five of all deaths in Australia. In 1998, 23,310 deaths were attributed to drug use:
  • 19,020 associated with tobacco use
  • 3270 related to alcohol use
  • 1020 as a result of illicit drug use
Drug dependence
The greatest drug harms caused in our society come from the legal drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
Drug dependence can be physical or psychological, or both. There are degrees of dependency, from mild dependency to compulsive drug use (addiction). It is impossible to say how long a person must take a drug before they will become dependent.
Experimenting does not necessarily lead to regular or dependent drug use, and regular use does not necessarily lead to problems. However, there is no "safe" level of drug use. All drugs have the potential to cause harm, not just the illegal ones.

Drug abuse is a very common problem in most countries so it seemed like a good topic for a list. This is a list of ten of the most abused drugs and the effects they have on people.
1. Heroin
A30100Heroin
Heroin is an opiate processed directly from the extracts of the opium poppy. It was originally created to help cure people of addiction to morphine. Upon crossing the blood-brain barrier, which occurs soon after introduction of the drug into the bloodstream, heroin is converted into morphine, which mimics the action of endorphins, creating a sense of well-being; the characteristic euphoria has been described as an “orgasm” centered in the gut. One of the most common methods of heroin use is via intravenous injection.

For the last 4 months, my partner and I have been recreationally using heroin. H became our weekend ritual. Lighting candles, playing music, brie and wine and grapes, reading tarot and finally fucking… for hours on end, the most intense beautiful technicolor sex. Each time we did it we got closer to each other. And each time we did it, we wanted to do it again, and again. We tried saying we’d only do it once every two weeks, but that lasted 6 days. We have rules about how much we do in one night, how late we stay up and so on. So far the rules have kept us safe from addiction. Unless you consider the nagging i-don’t-wanna-go-a-weekend-or-have-sex-without-it feelings. We’ve never run out, although, once we were down to our last little bit and I left the vial open on the night stand. I was reaching for the lube when I heard the most sickening sound, the vial falling over. Turns out, I was mistaken, I had remembered to put the cap back on. But in those few seconds of uncertainty, my girl and I shot each other a look we had never seen before.. Fear.
2. Cocaine
Cocaine
Cocaine is a crystalline tropane alkaloid that is obtained from the leaves of the coca plant. It is both a stimulant of the central nervous system and an appetite suppressant, giving rise to what has been described as a euphoric sense of happiness and increased energy. It is most often used recreationally for this effect. Cocaine is a potent central nervous system stimulant. Its effects can last from 20 minutes to several hours, depending upon the dosage of cocaine taken, purity, and method of administration. The initial signs of stimulation are hyperactivity, restlessness, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate and euphoria. The euphoria is sometimes followed by feelings of discomfort and depression and a craving to experience the drug again. Sexual interest and pleasure can be amplified. Side effects can include twitching, paranoia, and impotence, which usually increases with frequent usage.
The cocaine arrived and we agreed to use it at a time that translated to three and a half hours after I arrived. It cost $60 for what I was told was an eighth of a gram. This seemed rather expensive, but I was assured that it was ‘high quality product.’ I took the line up my left nostril. After about ninety seconds, I felt my heartbeat increase. It was definitely kicking in. I began to worry a bit, as I could feel my heart pounding and my pulse increasing. I finally felt as if it had reached a plateau. My heartbeat became level, albeit still very high. Many people say that one feels euphoria – being invincible and/or the desire to clean the house. I did not feel either of these (and I did remember to think about these things). For me, the positive effects of cocaine came directly from knowing that I had reached a plateau and I was going to be fine. I felt invigorated, yet also very comfortable.
One of the best treatment for drug addiction is to consult with cocaine rehab centers for recovery.
3. Methamphetamine
Ice Methamphetamine Pipe
Methamphetamime, popularly shortened to meth or ice, is a psychostimulant and sympathomimetic drug. Methamphetamine enters the brain and triggers a cascading release of norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. Since it stimulates the mesolimbic reward pathway, causing euphoria and excitement, it is prone to abuse and addiction. Users may become obsessed or perform repetitive tasks such as cleaning, hand-washing, or assembling and disassembling objects. Withdrawal is characterized by excessive sleeping, eating and depression-like symptoms, often accompanied by anxiety and drug-craving.
We first smoked meth on New Year’s Eve because we heard it was great for sex. I had to work the next day and so saved some to smoke before work in the morning. When I got home another g was waiting for me and I smoked every day but one until I finally quit three months later. For three weeks we smoked meth with little consequence, then my skin became fragile and in addition to breaking out, started to swell. I was really worried because I was constantly thirsty and drinking water, but I rarely urinated. Then my kidneys started hurting. I had lost twenty pounds in two months and my husband had lost thirty, and we’d read somewhere that rapid weight loss can cause kidney failure. I slept every three or four days for an hour or so and woke feeling rested. I was an hour late for work everyday. My husband wrecked the truck three times. One day I forgot to feed my son. Everything was either the highest of highs or the lowest of lows, no in between existed anymore. We were banned from the sauna at our apartment complex because no one else could use it. Our sweat smelled so strongly of ammonia it burned the eyes, it was caustic, and it burned our skin too. My husband and I haven’t done any drugs at all for four weeks, and things are slowly going back to normal. But I still want it. I can’t sleep tonight because I want it. I wrote this in all honesty mostly to help myself, to remind myself why I don’t want it. And still I want it.
4. Crack Cocaine
Crack-15
Crack cocaine, often nicknamed “crack”, is believed to have been created and made popular during the early 1980s . Because of the dangers for manufacturers of using ether to produce pure freebase cocaine, producers began to omit the step of removing the freebase precipitate from the ammonia mixture. Typically, filtration processes are also omitted. Baking soda is now most often used as a base rather than ammonia for reasons of lowered odor and toxicity; however, any weak base can be used to make crack cocaine. When commonly “cooked” the ratio is 1:1 to 2:3 parts cocaine/bicarbonate.
As I held the smoke in for a ten count and exhaled, I thought I felt nothing except a little excitement that was neither bad nor pleasurable. The complete rush some writers have called a ‘whole-body orgasm’ hit me shortly after and I distinctly remember demanding ‘more’ as soon as the realization of heaven-on-earth came. Some people say that the effects of smoking crack lasts 10-15 minutes. For me, it was just a shortest instant of gratification. Everything afterwards was just a great increase in energy and confidence geared towards obtaining more of the drug.
5. LSD
Large Photos Lsd
Lysergic acid diethylamide, LSD, LSD-25, or acid, is a semisynthetic psychedelic drug of the tryptamine family. Arguably the most regarded of all psychedelics, it is considered mainly as a recreational drug, an entheogen, and a tool in use to supplement various types of exercises for transcendence including in meditation, psychonautics, and illegal psychedelic psychotherapy whether self administered or not. LSD’s psychological effects (colloquially called a “trip”) vary greatly from person to person, depending on factors such as previous experiences, state of mind and environment, as well as dose strength. They also vary from one trip to another, and even as time passes during a single trip. An LSD trip can have long term psychoemotional effects; some users cite the LSD experience as causing significant changes in their personality and life perspective. Widely different effects emerge based on what Leary called set and setting; the “set” being the general mindset of the user, and the “setting” being the physical and social environment in which the drug’s effects are experienced.
About ten years ago I bought my third trip from a guy in my home town Norwich (UK) It was a ‘Strawberry’ and I was told it had been double dipped. The guy had a reputation for selling good acid so I happily gave him my cash. I took the single LSD tab in the late morning in a positive state of mind with no worries or anxieties. I began to come up on the acid towards the lunch time. It was to be the first and last time I’d ever trip alone. Outside it was a glorious sunny day but I was happy enough in my temporary sanctuary to even think about going outside. The LSD rush started blazing up my spine and racing through my guts, I felt a little uneasy with it but had enough mind to allow myself to just go with it and wait until the rush plateaued. I was having a wonderful time, watching floral Escher type patterns breathing over my skin. I vaguely recall deciding to go downstairs again for some reason then the next thing I recall was awakening on the floor of the dining room alone. The first thing I noticed was that there were blowflies buzzing around a bowl of catfood on the kitchen floor. I remember feeling perplexed as to why both flies had two bright neon after images in red and blue. Somehow I navigated myself through Norwich during the busy lunchtime shoppers and begun to head in the direction of the city’s central park ‘Chapelfield gardens’. If you could imagine for a moment being surrounded by people in a busy place where their heads had been removed and replaced by Squids and Octopus you might begin to accurately picture the scene confronting me in the park. Everyone had tentacles smothering their faces and dangling down their necks like fleshy snake beards, even the women and children were not exempt from this disfiguration. In retrospect, it was the worst day of my entire life, It was the closest I can imagine to having full blown psychosis.

6. Ecstasy
Ecstasy Pill Collage1
Ecstasy (MDMA) is a semisynthetic psychedelic entactogen of the phenethylamine family that is much less visual with more stimulant like effects than most all other common “trip” producing psychedelics. It is considered mainly a recreational drug that’s often used with sex and associated with club drugs, as an entheogen, and a tool in use to supplement various types of practices for transcendence including in meditation, psychonautics, and illicit psychedelic psychotherapy whether self administered or not. The primary effects of MDMA include an increased awareness of the senses, feelings of openness, euphoria, empathy, love, happiness, heightened self-awareness, feeling of mental clarity and an increased appreciation of music and movement. Tactile sensations are enhanced for some users, making physical contact with others more pleasurable. Other side effects, such as jaw clenching and elevated pulse, are common.
Sitting comfortably in our cosy living room, Café del Mar and similar CDs playing in the background, we began at 8 pm. I swallowed one white tablet with water. Over the next hour nothing much happened except that I found myself talking quite openly and confidently with the others, moving very easily into interesting conversations. This was a little unusual for me as I am normally quite shy and overly self-conscious in social situations and it takes me a while to loosen up. The next thing I experienced was a striking shift in my visual perception. I don’t mean a hallucination or a distortion, but a wonderful step up in the aesthetic quality. For a moment it was like being in one of those nostalgic TV ads where the world looks all gold and sepia. ‘Everything’s gone amber!’ I blurted. But then I found that my vision was becoming beautifully enhanced. It made my normal visual experience seem like cheap, fuzzy CCTV footage in comparison. Now I was seeing the world anew in sharp, lush, top-quality Technicolor! I also began to move in time to the music. The music! Oh, the music! Wow! It sounded so good, so organic! The uplifted state stayed with me and took a long time to fade — at least a couple of weeks. It had unleashed in me a rush of joy that was still accessible when I focused on it weeks later.
7. Opium
Opium
Opium is a resinous narcotic formed from the latex released by lacerating (or “scoring”) the immature seed pods of opium poppies (Papaver somniferum). It contains up to 16% morphine, an opiate alkaloid, which is most frequently processed chemically to produce heroin for the illegal drug trade. Opium has gradually been superseded by a variety of purified, semi-synthetic, and synthetic opioids with progressively stronger effect, and by other general anesthesia. This process began in 1817, when Friedrich Wilhelm Adam Sertürner reported the isolation of pure morphine from opium after at least thirteen years of research and a nearly disastrous trial on himself and three boys.
I remember that what I smoked was much easier to smoke than marijuana. There was no burning in my throat nor in my lungs. I took a very large, smooth hit. Smoking it like marijuana, I held it in for about 10 or 15 seconds and let it out. It didn’t taste like marijuana, I remember the taste being rather faint. It actually tasted and smelled like incense. I was very surprised to suddenly find myself on the floor, in the dark, with a crowd of people surrounding me. Apparently I had fainted and fallen to the ground, but I hadn’t noticed. The high itself is rather hard to describe. It was much more intense than marijuana. It felt heavy, like my whole body was being impacted… but it also felt very clear and refined at the same time. As I made my way towards the bathroom the drug began to kick in again. My steps kind of faded away and it felt like I was just floating over to the bathroom. The scary thing was though, that I was having trouble seeing. My vision was fading. Distinct figures melted into shadows and everything had a sparkle to it. All of a sudden, everything felt really good. I couldn’t stop smiling. Everything was profound in a very positive way, especially the music since it resonated everywhere. It was a very abstruse experience. I imagine that I was coming down at this point, an hour had surely past by because the band was building a climax to end their first set. I went along with the crowd and made my way outside. The fresh air was wonderful. The cool air seemed to wrap around my body. A slight breeze on the back of my neck sent chills that rapidly multiplied throughout my body.
8. Marijuana
Cannabis-Sativa
Cannabis, known as marijuana in its herbal form, is a psychoactive product of the plant Cannabis sativa. Humans have been consuming cannabis since prehistory, although in the 20th century there was a rise in its use for recreational, religious or spiritual, and medicinal purposes. It is estimated that about four percent of the world’s adult population use cannabis annually. It has psychoactive and physiological effects when consumed, usually by smoking or ingestion. The minimum amount of THC required to have a perceptible psychoactive effect is about 10 micrograms per kilogram of body weight. The state of intoxication due to cannabis consumption is colloquially known as a “high”; it is the state where mental and physical facilities are noticeably altered due to the consumption of cannabis. Each user experiences a different high, and the nature of it may vary upon factors such as potency, dose, chemical composition, method of consumption and set and setting.
After taking that first hit, and not feeling the effects within a minute (holding it in for a minute, and then waiting a little bit after exhaling) I decided, well I better hit this again, harder if I can. I took just as large of a hit, and again held it in for longer than a minute. I let my brother know I was really starting to feel something now and I don’t think I liked it all. It snuck up on me really bad, and I still had no idea what to expect. I wanted him to be quiet. Laying down was not helping, so I got back up. I went back to the garage and tried to explain to everyone ‘I am totally fucked up. This is scary!’ I was rationalizing everything tremendously, but it was SO intense! And it was only getting more intense faster! I didn’t know what to expect, I was sinking within myself, accelerating downward like into the depths of my own oblivion. I was a novice, I had no idea what to expect, and the world had become out of synch, the talking of my brothers, his friend, all ridiculous and extremely annoying. I became amazingly irritable and wanted them to leave me alone or not talk in my presence. They did not understand or appreciate my fear, and they began to get loud again. I ran upstairs to my parents bed and laid down with some wistful hope that I could wait out this storm.
9. Psilocybin Mushrooms
800Px-Dried Cubensis
Psilocybin mushrooms (also called psilocybian mushrooms) are fungi that contain the psychedelic substances psilocybin and psilocin, and occasionally other psychoactive tryptamines. There are multiple colloquial terms for psilocybin mushrooms, the most common being magic mushrooms or ‘shrooms. When psilocybin is ingested, it is broken down to produce psilocin, which is responsible for the hallucinogenic effects. The intoxicating effects of psilocybin-containing mushrooms typically last anywhere from 3 to 7 hours depending on dosage, preparation method and personal metabolism. The experience is typically inwardly oriented, with strong visual and auditory components. Visions and revelations may be experienced, and the effect can range from exhilarating to distressing. There can be also a total absence of effects, even with large doses.
I had acquired about 8 grams of dried mushrooms and some liquid psilocybin equivalent to another 5 grams of powdered mushrooms. I swallowed the liquid first, on an empty stomach of course. I could feel a slight sensation after about 10-15 minutes. Then I added the powder to some water in a mug and swallowed that also. I then sat by the camp fire, listening to the wind in the trees while I contemplated what was about to happen. After about 45-50 minutes I heard a ‘voice’ calling to me. It wasn’t audible in the normal sense – it came from inside my own mind! Then I was gone – out of this world. I escaped into what I perceived to be the outer boundaries of my mind or my imagination. This placed presented itself as a natural forest with low light. Here I met the owner of the aforementioned voice – the Mushroom Goddess. She took the form of a white, strapless, ankle-length dress, standing side-on from me. For about the next two hours I dialoged with her, becoming totally bewitched by her charm, her wit, her intelligence, her knowledge, her unconditional affection for me and her seemingly infinite perspective. I have come to think of her as my other-worldly girlfriend.
10. PCP
Pcp5
PCP (Phencyclidine) is a dissociative drug formerly used as an anesthetic agent, exhibiting hallucinogenic and neurotoxic effects. It is commonly known as Angel Dust, but is also known as Wet, Sherm, Sherman Hemsley, Rocket Fuel, Ashy Larry, Shermans Tank, Wack, Halk Hogan, Ozone, HannaH, Hog, Manitoba Shlimbo, and Embalming Fluid, among other names. Although the primary psychoactive effects of the drug only last hours, total elimination from the body is prolonged, typically extending over weeks. PCP is consumed in a recreational manner by drug users, mainly in the United States, where the demand is met by illegal production. It comes in both powder and liquid forms (PCP base dissolved most often in ether), but typically it is sprayed onto leafy material such as marijuana, mint, oregano, parsley or Ginger Leaves, and smoked. PCP has potent effects on the nervous system altering perceptual functions (hallucinations, delusional ideas, delirium or confused thinking), motor functions (unsteady gait, loss of coordination, and disrupted eye movement or nystagmus), and autonomic nervous system regulation (rapid heart rate, altered temperature regulation). The drug has been known to alter mood states in an unpredictable fashion causing some individuals to become detached and others to become animated.
When I was taking the drug, I used very small amounts. The effect was incredibly pleasant and social, so much so that me and my friends all used it instead of booze for almost a year. I couldn’t dance for shit on the stuff (I’d get stumbly and actually fell on my ass on the dancefloor once) but the physical sensations and mental pictures were really fun. It is quite different from any psychedelic visuals or even Ketamine visuals…more like rolling through old film footage. To be honest, I liked it more than my experiences on Ketamine. PCP can make one nearly impervious to pain at high doses. Because of this, PCP can make things seem like a good idea that otherwise wouldn’t (leading to the stories of people leaping out of windows, etc.) I experienced very confusing physical reality when really high on it, like being unable to discern the difference between walking up stairs and down them, or standing still and walking. This could lead to very unusual behaviour.

RIM BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 and the LG Cosmos Touc

In this cell phone review, we will take a peak at RIM's BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 and the LG Cosmos Touch. The BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 is the latest RIM phone for AT&T. It comes equipped with 3G support and many other features for business and pleasure. The phone is a tad expensive, carrying a price tag of $499.99 without a contract and $99.99 with a two-year contract from AT&T.

The Curve 3G 9300 comes equipped with BlackBerry OS 5. While that's the configuration out of the box, you can upgrade it to BlackBerry OS 6. Some of the upgrades found in OS 6 include universal search, an improved notifications bar and home screen, plus a revamped Webkit browser.
Beyond the OS-centric features, the Curve 3G 9300 comes with plenty of standard features. There's a speakerphone, a calculator, and an alarm clock.  Organizational tools include a calendar, a memo pad, a voice recorder, and a to-do list.  The phone has 256 MB of internal memory, and ships with a 2 GB microSD card. There's plenty of room to store your contacts and input multiple phone numbers, email addresses, and other relevant data. You can also add a photo and ringtone to contacts.
Advanced features of the Curve 3G 9300 are headlined by Bluetooth 2.1 with support for stereo headsets, hands-free car kits, A2DP, and more. The phone supports voice commands, has visual voicemail, and can be synched with your PC.  Integrated GPS paired with AT&T's Navigator service can help you with voice-guided directions while on the road. You can connect to the Internet via AT&T's 3G network or using the phone's integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi. Once connected, you can surf the net with a full-HTML browser that allows you to view full versions of websites. Those who travel overseas for business or pleasure can use the Curve 3G 9300 on international networks, since it's a quad-band world phone.
Text and multimedia messaging are the most basic services of their type on the smartphone. You can also instant message for quick chatting. There are several options when it comes to email. The smartphone supports POP and IMAP accounts from providers like AOL, Yahoo, and Windows Live. It also allows you to view corporate email through Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, and BlackBerry Enterprise. If you have any work-related attachments, they can be accessed using the built-in viewer that works with Microsoft Office and PDF documents. Social networking through sites like Twitter and Facebook can be had using apps on the phone.
The BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 is not all business, as it has some entertainment-related features to keep you busy. The smartphone has a built-in MP3 player that lets you create playlists. You can also listen to music through the AT&T Mobile Music service. Video can be viewed through an integrated video player that supports various file formats, and MobiTV offers some extra visual entertainment. The phone come pre-loaded with social networking apps, games, and various other apps, too. Additional apps can be downloaded by visiting the BlackBerry App World.
A 2-megapixel camera rounds out the Curve 3G 9300's feature set. It can snap photos in various resolutions and settings, and it doubles as a video recorder as well. The overall quality of the photos and videos is average.
You won't find a whole revamped look with the 3G 9300, but fans of the BlackBerry family will probably enjoy that RIM stayed true to its aesthetic roots. It has plenty of similarities to the Curve 8520. The phone is easy to carry and measures 4.3 inches tall by 2.4 inches wide by 0.6 inch thick. It feels very comfortable in your hands and has a nice grip. The graphite gray color scheme is unassuming and professional, which is how many of its users probably prefer it to be.
The 2.4-inch display with 320 x 240 resolution provides plenty of color and clarity. Beneath the display are four touch-sensitive controls and a responsive trackpad. The keyboard is of the typical BlackBerry fodder, so previous BlackBerry owners should become accustomed to typing on it in no time.
The Curve 3G 9300 is a BlackBerry that remains true to its brand's build. This will obviously appeal to previous BlackBerry owners looking to upgrade their handsets. The phone's solid features and design make it a viable selection for those needing a smartphone for both business and pleasure, although its price is a bit on the high side.
The LG Cosmos Touch is a messaging-centric phone for Verizon Wireless customers that offers a rather standard feature set, a touch-screen, and a solid QWERTY keyboard. It may not be for everyone, but messaging fans could be enticed by its design. The Cosmos Touch is available for $79.99 after a two-year contract with Verizon Wireless.

The Cosmos Touch's most standard features include a speakerphone, an alarm clock, a stopwatch, a standard calculator, a tip calculator, a drawing pad, a world clock, and a calendar. The phone book can store up to 1,000 contacts, with room for multiple phone addresses, email addresses, and more for each.  Contacts can be sorted into groups, added to a favorites list, and be paired with a photo and ringtone.
Bluetooth 2.1 on the Cosmos Touch allows you to pair the phone with stereo headsets and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. Voice commands are supported, and so is USB mass storage. The phone's integrated GPS can be used with Verizon's VZ Navigator service to give you voice-guided directions.  Internet surfing is accomplished with a decent wireless web browser that also has Bing search.
Messaging seems to be the focus of the Cosmos Touch. You can text and multimedia message on the phone, and instant messaging is another quick option. The phone has offers social networking access to sites like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace too. There's also a mobile email service that lets you check POP3 and Microsoft Exchange accounts.
Entertainment options are somewhat limited, but you do get an integrated MP3 player. If you prefer a subscription-based service, there's VCAST Music with Rhapsody. The phone's 1.3-megapixel camera is very basic. You can use it to take photos and record video, but the quality is average and there are not a lot of adjustable settings.
The LG Cosmos Touch is very portable, measuring 4.1 inches tall by 2.1 inches wide by 0.7 inch thick and weighing 4.4 ounces. It fits easily into the palm of your hand and can easily be carried in a pocket. A tradeoff for the phone's small size is that its touch-screen display is a tad small as well. It measures 2.8 inches diagonally and has a 400 x 240 resolution. Since the Cosmos Touch is mostly meant for messaging, the smallish screen isn't a huge deal. The display is not too responsive to the touch, but it does give users some touch capability that they might desire.
Luckily, there's a full QWERTY keyboard that can be used by sliding the phone to the right. It works in landscape mode, and is very spacious.  The keys are large and make the phone excellent for messaging.
If you love messaging but do not place a premium on multimedia features, the LG Cosmos Touch could be the phone for you. It's not the most advanced phone on the market, but its design is suited for plenty of messaging. However, if you do want a phone packed with plenty of features, you should look elsewhere.

Kindle DX versus Nook Color

E-readers have grown in popularity recently, as they provide book lovers with a new avenue to enjoy their hobby. As e-reader popularity has increased, so has the competition among manufacturers of the devices. Apple, Sony, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble are the main players, and each is doing its best to come out with devices that are rich in features and competitive in price. In this article, we compare the Kindle DX to the Nook Color. Who wins? Only one way to find out!Price
Price is obviously a major deciding factor when it comes to purchasing any product.  Since e-readers are considered to be luxury items for most, however, price becomes much more important.  An e-reader may or may not be used on a daily basis.  For that reason, you may steer towards a more affordable device.  The Barnes & Noble Nook Color falls into this category, as it costs $249.
On the more expensive end of the price spectrum is the Kindle DX.  It costs $379, which is $130 more than the Nook Color.  Of course, with the higher cost comes more features, which we will discuss in a bit.  Still, if you are looking to sacrifice some bells and whistles for a cheaper price, the Nook Color is the winner here.
Round One: Nook Color

Display
Besides price, display is probably the most important factor to consider when shopping for an e-reader.  After all, your eyes will be concentrated on the display as you read, so you do not want to have a display that makes reading uncomfortable.
In terms of sheer size, the Kindle DX has the upper hand.  It has a large 9.7-inch display, similar to the iPad's size.  The Nook Color has a 7-inch display.  Now, each has features that allow you to customize the font and its size, so you are not exactly limited just because the display is smaller.  Regardless, from the start, you do get a nearly 3-inch advantage with the Kindle DX.
Touch-screen capability is another consideration in the display department.  You may want the added functionality that a touch-screen brings, or you may find it to be unnecessary.  The Kindle DX does not have a touch-screen.  The Nook Color does, and gives its users more flexibility as they read.
Last, but not least, is color.  Do you want a color display that helps bring magazines and similar media to life?  Or do you prefer the old fashioned black and white ink?  The Nook Color can display over 16 million colors.  The Kindle DX has an E Ink screen that mimics real paper.  With the DX, you can read outdoors and in bright places without having to worry about glare.  Besides the glare issues, some find the black and white E Ink to be easier on the eyes as time passes.  You will have to decide whether you want a more enriched reading experience with color, or a more relaxed one with the Kindle DX.
Round Two: Depends on user preferences.
Overall size
Unless you are a quick reader, you will probably be using your e-reader for extended periods of time.  With that in mind, the device's size and bulk is important.  You may want something smaller that is easy to manage so you won't wear yourself out.
The larger display of the Kindle DX translates into the device's bulkier dimensions.  It measures 10.4 inches tall by 7.2 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick and weighs 18.9 ounces.  The Nook Color measures 8.1 inches tall by 5 inches wide by 0.5 inch thick and weighs 15.8 ounces.  The Nook is obviously more portable, and its smaller size could definitely draw some buyers who are looking for an e-reader that is less imposing.
Round Three: Nook, for portability.
Connectivity
Connectivity on the go is important for any portable device, and an e-reader is no exception.  If you are on the road and want to download or purchase a new book, connectivity will definitely come into play.  The Kindle DX comes with free 3G access, while the Nook Color only offers Wi-Fi.  The Nook Color's Wi-Fi only status will obviously limit you more than the Kindle DX with its 3G service.  You can circumvent the connectivity limitation by downloading your books prior to traveling, however.
Round Four: Kindle DX.

E-book selection
Your favorite books probably see similar availability among the competing e-book stores.  Regardless, both Amazon and Barnes & Noble like to boast when it comes to their selections.  Nook Color owners supposedly have a library of over 2 million books.  Amazon lists its selection at over 850,000.  It also offers over 1.8 million out of copyright books from the pre-1923 era.  Both stores offer books for around $9.99 or less.  Another thing to consider in terms of e-book selection is the inability of the Kindle DX to read the EPUB format.
Round Five: Draw.
Extras
Despite its lower price, the Nook Color has some nice extras built into its feature set.  It has a web browser, a media player, Pandora internet radio, plus some games.  The fact that it is Android-based also throws in the potential of some app functionality.
The Kindle DX is more of a dedicated reader, so you won't find many extras.  One reading-based extra that many might find useful, however, is its Read-to-Me feature.  The feature allows the device to read books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs aloud when supported.
Final Round: Nook Color.
Conclusion
As you can see, both the Kindle DX and Nook Color bring different advantages to the table.  The Kindle DX is larger, has a bigger display, and might appeal to more conventional readers.  The Nook Color is smaller, has touch-screen capability, and offers vivid color.  It also includes extras like web browsing and a media player.  Price-wise, the Kindle DX is much more.
In the end, the decision on which e-reader to buy comes down to personal preference.  If you are willing to pay extra for a dedicated, conventional e-reader, the Kindle DX is the best option.  If you want to save some extra cash and are looking for more of an all-around device, the Nook Color is the better of the two.

So what exactly is Google Apps? It is Google’s online collaboration suite designed to compete with larger enterprise players such as Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes, but it does so by offering an exceptional service at a low price. With Google Apps, you are no longer at the mercy of your @gmail.com address--you can use it with your own domain! This functionality allows businesses and organizations to use their own domains with the Gmail service. So if you own www.mycompany.com, you can now use your email address, jdoe@mycompany.com, with Gmail. You no longer need to set up complicated forwarding rules or use the outdated IMAP protocol--you get the full power of Gmail (and the other services) with your own domain. And since Google Apps was designed for business users, you get a full back-end for managing your users, services, and other organization-specific functionality.

Google Apps is available in four different versions:

   1. Standard Google Apps, which is free.
   2. Google Apps for Education, which is free for all educational institutions and 501(C)(3) non-profits.
   3. Google Apps for Business, which is $50 per user, per year.
   4. Google Apps for Government, which is $50 per user, per year, and is certified by the U.S. government.

Google Apps for Business, Education, and Government are essentially the same product with the same features, except educational and non-profit institutions are free. Google Apps Standard includes the core Google productivity services, but lacks the additional space, reporting, and back-end management provided by the Business edition. You can find a full comparison of features among all editions here.

In this tutorial, we will be setting up a free Google Apps account. The setup process is very easy and straightforward, and with any luck, you should be up and running in about an hour. Before you begin, you will need to make sure you have access to a domain (it can be a sub domain if you do not want to disrupt your current mail flow), and you will also need the ability to edit the domain’s current DNS records. If you do not know what DNS records are, then this tutorial may be too complicated for you. If you make the wrong change, you can severely inhibit your domain’s visibility on the Internet.
Signing up for Google Apps

To begin the setup process, visit http://www.google.com/a. From the top menu, go to Solutions -> Google Apps (Free), then click the blue Get Started button.

Next, you will be asked to enter your domain. This can be a root domain (example.com) or a sub domain (party.example.com). Once you have entered the desired domain name, click the Get Started button.

Next, you will need to enter some information about yourself and/or your organization. Remember, you can use the standard Google Apps for free even if you are using it for business purposes. After you have entered the required information, click the Continue button.

After you have entered the required information, you will now set up your first administrator account. After entering the appropriate information, agree to the TOS, then click the I Accept Continue with Set Up button.

After your information has been processed successfully, you will be redirected to your Google Apps administrator control panel. Enter the administrator username and password you created earlier, then click the Sign in button.

After you have logged in, Google will prompt you with some information regarding Google Apps accounts and standard Google Accounts. Prior to 2010, Google had two types of accounts: Google Accounts and Google Apps accounts. The problem with this setup was that it allowed users to have two completely separate accounts, but still use the same email address. And since these accounts were separate, you were unable to share any data between the two, like Gmail contacts. Google solved this problem by merging Google Apps accounts into Google Accounts, thus streamlining data sharing among all Google services.

But enough with this history lesson; let’s get back to setting up our domain! Click the I accept Continue to My Account button to continue setting up your account.

Before you can start using Google Apps, Google will require you to verify ownership of your domain. This can be done a number of ways:

   1. Modify the domain’s DNS settings.
   2. Modify the HTML of a web page on the domain.
   3. Upload an HTML file to the web server.
   4. Link to a Google Analytics account.

While it is possible to skip this process and start it at a later time, I find it easier to do this part now instead of forgetting about it later. Click the Continue button to start the verification process.

Next, you will select the verification method Google will use to verify the domain. I find the third option -- Upload an HTML file to your server -- to be the easiest and quickest option, because once the file is uploaded, Google will find it instantly. If you select the Add a DNS record to your domain’s configuration option, it may take anywhere from several minutes to several hours for the verification process to complete, because the DNS changes must propagate through tens of thousands of DNS servers, which of course takes time.

In this tutorial, I am going to select the third option -- Upload an HTML file to your server -- to verify my domain ownership. You can select another method if you wish; the end result will be the same. After selecting this option, you will need to perform the following tasks:

   1. Download the verification file (You will find this in the blue box).
   2. Upload this file to the root of your domain, eg, http://example.com/google2o0j230dj23.html
   3. Visit the link to confirm the file is uploaded.
   4. Click the Verify button.

Once you have double-checked everything, click the Verify button to continue.

Once Google successfully verifies your domain, you will be redirected to your Google Apps control panel, specifically the Dashboard page.

Activating Email

Before you start exploring the administrative interface, we are going to finish the setup process by activating Gmail. To do this, scroll down towards the bottom of the Dashboard page, then click Activate email under the Email heading.

Now you will begin the email configuration process. Google makes this step very easy by providing you with specific instructions based on your domain registrar. For example, if you are with DreamHost (as in this example), it shows you the exact steps to follow according to each registrar’s control panel. Not every domain registrar is listed, but the most popular ones are. Because this step varies so widely from one registrar to the next, it is impossible to describe the exact steps you will need to follow to make the necessary changes. However, I will list the basic steps to completing this task.

   1. Log in to your domain registrar’s control panel.
   2. Find a listing for all of your domains.
   3. Find the domain you used in this tutorial, then look for an option to edit the domain’s settings.
   4. Look for MX (email) records. You will need to update the current MX records for the domain (they are probably set for your web host’s mail servers).
   5. Enter ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM as your new MX record. If you have the option to set a priority, just enter 10.
   6. Save the changes.

Once you have updated your domain’s MX records, click the I have completed these steps button to finish the process.

Google will now verify your updated MX settings for your domain. This process can take up to 48 hours, so you must be patient. You can find the status of this process by viewing the Email heading on the Dashboard. You will not be able to send or receive any emails until this process completes.

When the email activation process completes, the gray “Updating” message will disappear.

Conclusion

In the past few minutes (I told you this would be quick), you were able to successfully sign up for Google Apps, setup your domain, verify your domain, and activate the Gmail service. You have just completed all the steps necessary to have a fully functioning Google Apps suite for personal or business use.

In my next article, I will show you the inner workings of Google Apps, which will include a brief overview of your domain’s global settings, a list of best practices, an overview of your support options, and an introduction to the Google Apps Marketplace so you can extend the functionality of Google Apps one step further.
